I"m Grad Recruitment Advisor in our
dept this year, so wanted to ask you to refer any strong undergrads finishing up
this year and on their way to grad programs... or MA students
(we offer only PhD, no terminal MA). Despite the
admittedly horrible economic situation in CA now and in the UC system (pay
cuts!!), our grad program has been thriving the past few years - we"ve got
really amazing students these days and wonderful new (as well as longstanding)
senior and jr faculty. And ours is a good program for students interested in
"East/West Studies," science fiction, film studies, women"s studies and gender
issues, etc.
Dear Prospective Graduate
Applicant,
We are writing to let you know about the unique and
progressive graduate opportunities offered by the
Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages at the University of
California, Riverside. Located on the Pacific Rim, in one of the most
vibrantly diverse and international regions of the United States, we offer
innovative programs in both interliterary and interdisciplinary studies, as well
as a new track in science fiction studies.
The University of California, Riverside,
situated in the greater Los Angeles area, is a major research university in the
University of California system. The majority of our
graduate students receive fellowships, T.A.-ships, and other forms of
financial support, and our students come from around the world. Among
the literatures students may work in are Chinese, English, French,
German, Classical Greek, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Filipino,
Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
The faculty of the Department of Comparative Literature and
Foreign Languages are widely-known for their work in East-West comparative
studies, and for a newly established PhD track in Science Fiction Studies. We
offer a robust and balanced comparative Asian and European literature, culture,
and theory program, which includes concentrations in gender and feminist
studies, postcolonial studies, global cultures, critical theory, science and
science fiction studies, comparative ancient studies, and cultural studies.

The library facilities of the University of California system
are outstanding, and the Special Collections of UCR’s Rivera Library includes
the world-famous Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Downtown
Riverside is the home of the California Museum of Photography. UC Irvine, UC San
Diego and UC Los Angeles courses and libraries offer UC Riverside students
further access to cutting-edge faculty and research resources.
The campus, located an hour east of Los Angeles, is in a
region featuring mountains, hot springs, wineries, beaches, and the spectacular
natural reserves of Joshua Tree and Anza Borego National Parks, as well as the
cultural riches of metropolitan Los Angeles itself, within easy driving
distance.
